Three everyday foods, three amazing tales. Here’s why bread, cheese, and beans aren’t as simple as you think.
Legend says bread was discovered when an Egyptian accidentally left grain paste in the sun. The next day, they found it had risen into the first loaf of bread. While cooking it, the heavenly smell drew a crowd – and bread became known as the food of the gods.
The story of cheese is even better. An Arab merchant was crossing the desert, carrying milk in a sheep’s stomach bag. The hot sun and enzymes in the bag turned his milk into cheese. Imagine his surprise when he opened it that night! That’s why many people call cheese “a gift from a hungry traveler.”
As for beans, an old folk tale claims they were magical seeds that could grow overnight and reach the heavens. While that’s just a story (sorry, Jack!), beans are pretty magical – they can feed both the poor and the rich, and some say they bring good luck if eaten on New Year’s Day.
Want comfort food fit for ancient gods and travelers? Toast some bread, melt cheese on top, and serve with warm, lucky beans on the side.
