Embracing My Bessarabian Bulgarian Heritage

Growing up as a Bessarabian Bulgarian in a close-knit community, I was surrounded by the rich traditions of my ancestors. Despite this, I often felt ashamed of my heritage, especially as a minority in a larger society. It took me many years to realize that my Bessarabian Bulgarian roots are not something to be hidden, but rather the very core of who I am.

Bessarabian Bulgarians have a unique history, having settled in the region of Bessarabia (now parts of Moldova and Ukraine) in the 18th and 19th centuries. Our ancestors brought with them a wealth of cultural traditions that have been preserved and cherished by generations. As a child, I was immersed in these traditions, from the colorful folk costumes and intricate embroidery to the lively horo dances and the delicious banitsa pastries.

One of the things I love most about my Bessarabian Bulgarian heritage is the strong sense of community and family. Our traditions emphasize the importance of togetherness, whether it’s gathering for holidays like St. Demetrius Day or helping each other with agricultural work. This deep connection to family and community has been a constant source of support and belonging for me throughout my life.

Moreover, my Bessarabian Bulgarian roots have instilled in me a deep appreciation for hard work, resilience, and perseverance. Our ancestors faced numerous challenges, from adapting to new lands to preserving their identity in the face of assimilation pressures. Their determination and strength have been passed down through generations, and I am proud to carry on this legacy.

As I have grown older, I have come to understand that my Bessarabian Bulgarian heritage is a fundamental part of my identity. Embracing my roots has allowed me to connect more deeply with myself and my community, and to appreciate the richness and beauty of our traditions.
