From Skeptic to Devotee: How Meditation Broke Me Open

What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

For me, it’s meditation. And when I say I changed my mind, I mean it turned my world upside down.

I used to think meditation was unnecessary fluff. A waste of time for those who had nothing better to do. After all, I was self-aware, productive, and had my life together. Or so I thought.

We often hear about meditation as a gentle practice. A calm oasis in the storm of daily life.

For me, it crashed through my carefully constructed walls like a wrecking ball.

On the floor, a sobbing mess… Years of bottled-up emotions pouring out in a torrent I couldn’t control. Where did this come from? Why didn’t anyone warn me?

All those emotions, all that pain I thought I’d dealt with? They were right there, waiting for a chance to break free.

And meditation? It wasn’t just opening a door. It was blowing the whole damn house down.

It was terrifying.

It was overwhelming.

It was exactly what I needed.

In the aftermath of that emotional explosion, I found something unexpected: relief. Like a pressure valve finally released, I felt lighter. Clearer. More… me.

That was almost a year ago. Now? Meditation isn’t just a daily thing. It’s my lifeline. My reality check. My way of staying connected to the self I rediscovered on that tear-stained floor.

Do I still have blind spots? Probably.

Am I still learning? Absolutely. But now, I’m no longer afraid to look inward. To sit with discomfort. To let the emotions flow, however messy they might be.

So here’s my warning to you, future meditator: be prepared for anything. Meditation might gently guide you to self-discovery. Or it might knock you flat on your back, leaving you raw and exposed.

Either way, know this: on the other side of that intensity is a version of you that’s more authentic, more aware, more alive.

And trust me, it’s worth every earth-shattering moment.
